Let's hear the Armchair Historians hash this one out. This man truly had a tremensdous impact on World history.
He is the man responsible for creating the legendary " RED COATS " ...the first true British Standing Army...
He was Lord Protector of the British Empire, responsible for the creation of the English Commonwealth.... after declaring that monarchies were corrupt and having King Charles I beheaded.
He was also a puritan, in search of religious liberty ....yet he was murderously intolrant of Catholics...murdering men, women and children in the name of God during his siege at Drogheda.
Is he a monster?...A Military Genius....?...Man of faith on a mission defending his country or an overzealous religious monster?

Re: OLIVER CROMWELL ----Monster responsible for the Irish / English divide?
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 12:25 PMHonestly, I don't know much about him. Someone once told me I should be mad he did all those rotten things to the Irish side of my family, but I think the Scotch side was sitting in the highlands, flapping their kilts and showing their backsides to the roundhead, and so I just giggle.
My very vague opinion of Cromwell is that he strikes me as the Napoleon of Great Britain. He came a bit earlier, and was less of an egomaniac and fanatic (mostly for not being French, really), but he was the "big man" parallel.

"yes" is a great answer...
He was the only Military Dictator ever to rule England without the title of King (or Queen) .... maybe that’s why the exhumed his body and hung drew and quartered it...
"Oliver Cromwell" being a threat of mothers told to their children in Ireland for centuries attests his infamy there - the devil incarnate to Irish Catholics... he was a murdering bastard - but then again were so many other "great men" in history...
