Joseph Ellis, David McCullough, Doris Kearns-Goodwin, .....
Any outstanding New History books written lately that you would highly recommend?
I highly recommend " Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present" By Michael B. Oren.
And PLEASE.....no overtly political books......

Wed, April 11, 2007 - 8:41 AMSounds great...I'll have to check that out...
I was quite entertained recently with James Swansons' " Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer " /.
Learned a lot about what actually took place, helped rid my brain of all the lore surrounding his death.

Re: WHAT NEW HISTORY BOOKS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Thu, May 3, 2007 - 11:06 AMTEAM OF RIVALS : The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin
I have learned so much about what it must've been like to be Abe during this time of crisis.....
the tightrope walk of keeping the Pro-Abolition states happy while maintaining the pro-slavery Union states on his side....
Union vs Abolition.......
All while thwarting internal backstabbing on the government level, the inteminable sorrow of losing his friends and family to war and his own son death in the White House....
MAN...I do not envy this man...

Re: WHAT NEW HISTORY BOOKS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 2:24 PMNot a book, but this site has good analysis of the pre-Civil War sectional rivalry and Lincoln administration. The former was especially interesting because the Civil War itself continues to be discussed, while the preceding administrations which still had the choice of compromise vs. war languish in obscurity. (although the names of those presidents are well represented on San Francisco streets)
