Knights of the Golden Circle: They were quite a group before the civil war. They seem to have been one of the big pushers behind secession. Yet I can't find out much about them.
Also a group, promoting racism, with the words 'knights', and 'circle', in there names sounds very familiar. What if any, is the connection between them and the KKK?

Re: Knights of the Golden Circle?
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 7:10 PMMore recently, historian Bob Brewer has suggested that the Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) were a precursor to the KKK.

The real importance of a secret society is often far less than the rumors surrounding it. Supposed connections between two secret societies (for example between the Freemasons and the Knights Templar) is a rich subject for conspiracy theorists but much less so for historians.

Most of the interest in this subject comes from treasure hunters seeking lost Confederate gold. More money is likely to be made by people selling books than by those seeking treasure, however.

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 10:42 AMYou should find this group KGC interesting. Their philology if not there work was fundamental to causing the civil war. They didn't want to just protect slavery they wanted to expand it!
Also Forrest, I wonder if sometime conspiracy theorists don't sometime scare off real historians from looking into the events? It seem to me that there will might have been a connection some kind between the Scottish Freemasons and the Knights Templar, after the Knights had to flee the middle east. If I read the history right many of the Templars went to Scott Land and the Freemasons were strong there.

Re: Knights of the Golden Circle?
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 12:46 PMYou could probably do a thesis on it. But researching secret societies (particularly the old ones) is not something historians like to do . . . verifiable facts are thin on the ground . . . -

Not sure wither you meet the KGC, Freemasons, or the Knights Templars. Then again I suppose it true for all of them!
